INTRODUCTION

The Kenya National of (KNAS) is a learned, non-political, non-sectarian and non-profit making body founded on 2nd November 1983, and registered with the Attorney General Chambers of the government of Kenya.

The academy traces its roots to the Easter Africa Academy of sciences founded in 1963. Its fundamental aim is to cooperate and collaborate with the Government of Kenya, other scientific organizations and the general public in the mobilization of the scientific community in Kenya for the promotion of the scholarly application of all aspects of science and technology for national development.

Established under the auspices of the National council for science and technology (NCST), a government organization responsible for advising the government of Kenya on all matters related to science and technology, KNAS therefore derives its authority from the government through the science and technology act, Cap 250 Laws of Kenya, with the president of the republic of Kenya as its patron.

Membership

There are three categories of membership: Fellows (FKNAS), Honorary Fellows and members (MKNAS), membership of the national Academy is open to the citizens of the republic of Kenya of certain academic standing through application governing council confers fellowship on persons who have made outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology . Honorary fellowship is conferred to persons who would otherwise not qualify for election but who have made outstanding contribution in the furtherance of science and technology.

Fellows and members of the Kenya national Academy of science are granted the initials FKNAS and MKNAS after their names to indicate their status in the Academy. It is a mark of scientific distinction and integrity.

Objectives

The Kenya national Academy of science covers all fields of science, including humanitarian and technology. The major objectives and purposes for which the Academy is consulted include:

- To promote the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge, established and enhance standards of scientific and technological achievements in Kenya science community.

- To establish and maintain association and relations between Kenyan scientists and the international scientific community.

- To publish or assist in the publication of scientific knowledge

- To cooperate with the national council for science and technology in the formulation of policies and programmes designed to encourage the development and application of science and technology for national development.

To understand all such other activities as may be consistent with the objectives of the academy
 

Mission

To mobilize the science community in the creation, maintenance and advancement of knowledge in all fields of human endeavor, to effectively inform policy, build capacity in research and innovation, and provide solutions to improve quality of life.

To be a world class national professional organization for the promotion and effective utilization of science, technology and innovation for sustainable development.
